Leonard F. Hartwig Scholarship

The Leonard F. Hartwig Scholarship was established in 2005. Leonard graduated from Cortland High School and received his undergraduate degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University. Later he received graduate degrees from the Boston University of Theology. Leonard and Alta (Campbell) were married Aug. 22, 1947, in West Brookfield, Mass. Following marriage, Len and Alta served as missionaries in Monrovia, Liberia, a nation in west Africa. Returning to Nebraska, Leonard served in numerous United Methodist parishes and raised their three children. Leonard retired from the ministry in 1977. Len then worked at ALPO in Crete, and became an independent insurance representative. In addition to ministry, Len enjoyed farming, was a master Mason, and attained the rank of major in the Nebraska Civil Air Patrol. He also filled the position of assistant wing chaplain. Len volunteered for a number of organizations, most recently including the Lied Center for Performing Arts and the Folsom Children’s Zoo.
