Florence Turner Karlin Scholarship

The Florence Turner Karlin Scholarship was established in 2003. Florence was a graduate of Trumbull High School. She attended Kearney State College for two years and taught primary grades at Wauneta and Kearney before serving in the U.S. Navy for two years. Upon returning from the service, she attended Hastings College for her degree. In 1948, she began teaching in Denver Public Schools. She later enrolled in graduate school at Denver University where she earned a master’s degree. In 1954-55 she was a Fullbright Exchange Teacher in Ireland. Florence taught for 42 years and helped over a thousand children learn to read. Florence passed away in 2003 at the age of 88.

To apply, you must be a former graduate of any high school in Nebraska pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in education at a qualified college or university in Nebraska. The applicant must have completed at least his/her sophomore year in college, having maintained a minimum GPA of 3.0. The applicant may use this scholarship only for college credit courses. The scholarship cannot be used for workshops, seminars or similar types of training opportunities. Recipients may renew this scholarship for a period of up to 2 years total, provided they maintain a 3.0 GPA. To receive subsequent scholarship awards, previous recipients must annually submit a renewal application and their cumulative college transcript(s).

Additional Application Requirement: Two (2) references’ e-mail addresses. References will be notified to fill out an online form. References must be teachers, counselors, case workers, clergy, employers, neighbors, etc. (references from family members are not acceptable).
