The Charles F. and Carol A. van Rossum Scholarship was established in 2017 to help individuals of all ages continue their education. Chuck was born in Indonesia of Dutch ancestry and Carol in rural Illinois. Education and community involvement were important to Chuck and continues to be for Carol. Chuck immigrated to the United States at the age of 12. Not being able to speak English, he was placed two grades below his level. Instead of being discouraged and disliking school, Chuck excelled. Being able to give someone a small boost to furthering their educational goal is a tribute to the years Chuck spent as a student and as an educator at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln and Omaha. Chuck passed away in December 2014.
