Charles E. Jones Scholarship

The Charles E. Jones Scholarship was established in 1989. The late Charles E. Jones spent his life in school. A graduate of Cardozo High School in Washington, D.C., Dr. Jones earned a degree in elementary education from UNL in 1964 and a Masters degree in social work from the University of Missouri in 1970. He returned to Lincoln and earned his Ph.D. from UNL in education administration. Dr. Jones was the assistant dean of the College of Education at Ohio State University and an assistant professor of social work at UNO. In 1978, Dr. Jones became vice principal of Lincoln High School. He found his time spent at Lincoln High to be the most rewarding point of his career. Cancer took his life in 1989.

To apply, you must be a graduating senior from Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Nebraska who has attended LHS for at least two years and participated in at least one extra-curricular activity during your junior and senior years at LHS. You must rank in the top half of the graduating class and demonstrate evidence of growth in citizenship while at LHS. You must demonstrate financial need to pursue post-secondary education and be accepted for enrollment at an accredited two or four-year institution.

Additional Application Requirements: Three (3) references’ e-mail addresses. References will be notified to fill out an online form. References must be teachers, counselors, case workers, clergy, employers, neighbors, etc. (references from family members are not acceptable) and a special essay explaining how Lincoln High offers opportunities unique to Lincoln students. Explain how attendance at Lincoln High School has affected your development. Your essay should be no more than 250 words.
